An educational Touchscreen AR experience illustrating the dangers and effects of speeding on the road.
This project was a joint collaboration between the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI), the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT), indie studio Interactive Nature, and a few independent contractors (that’s me!!). I served as a Game Designer and Unreal Developer throughout production, and was very hands-on with the project from its concept phase all the way thru release on the App Store and subsequent updates.
The development lifecycle was only 3 months long, which was a huge departure for me after having worked on MLK for 16 months. I’m proud of what we were able to create within such a short timespan!
The application consists of two game modes, along with a handful of UI-only screens.
At first, the player will drive along a pre-defined track, trying to follow the speed limit signage. If the player makes it to the end of the track without crashing, they win. However, if they go over the speed limit on a turn in the track, they will trigger a cutscene showing their vehicle crashing into an obstacle.
After the crash sequence, the player will enter AR mode. This allows them to place their wrecked vehicle into the real world at an almost-life-sized scale, and explore the damage up-close.
While on the project, I served as a Game Designer and Unreal Developer - coupled together into one title as a Technical Game Designer. I was the only developer-type person on the project, so my role was primarily to build functionality and make design choices following the client’s initial requests. Along with this, I also…
